King Cup Success

Westfield (Sturridge Academy) continued their stellar start to the season with a comfortable 4 – 1 win over Bedfont Sports FC on Thursday in the 1st Round of the League Cup.

Following on from Monday nights 5 – 1 win in the FA Youth Cup, the Academy has now put together a run of 5 unbeaten in the League and Cup Competitions scoring some 22 goals in the process, while only conceding 6.

The Academy coaching staff made 5 changes to Monday night team both centre back, both centre forwards and a spot in the midfield all changing, but this didn’t stop the Yellow machine from rolling on.

On a perfect playing surface, 16° and with no rain and not even the hint of a zephyr of breeze, the Academy were straight on the front foot and had Bedfont pinned back in their own half. Some crisp passing from the back, through the middle was giving forwards Jason Dwumfuo and Titi Babington plenty of the ball. Right back Aidan King was having a field day and not only defending well but getting forward to put in some pinpoint crosses that were being asked to be put away.

A couple of at best half chance fell the Academy’s way in the opening 10 or 12 minutes and Bedfont did had the very odd sight at goal but this was quickly shut down.

The first real clear cut chance came on 14 minutes to Babington after a great run through the heart of the Bedfont defense by T’Sharne Gallimore, who then laid the ball into the path of Babington,  but his shot went just over the bar.

King then got in on the act and sent over one of close to a dozen crosses in the first half. This one on 18 minutes was only at best half cleared by a now already stretch Bedfont backline and the ball fell on the top of the box to Mitchell Smith, but his left foot drive under pressure went inches over the bar.

The Academy were now going forward at will and Victor Naranjo in the middle of the park had the ball on a string. His pass to Smith on 23 minutes allowed the young Australian to shimmy his way past a couple of Bedfont players before slipping a beautifully weighted through ball to Dwumfuo. The Academy number nine on his preferred left foot got to the ball as it just made its way into the box and a betting man would have put the lot on the opening goal, but Dwumfuo fired an inch wide of the upright.

3 minutes later Max Workman fired just over the bar and 60 seconds later a fine run down the middle of the park by Babington released Dwumfuo again but this time the Bedfont keeper saved well with his legs.

It was not dissimilar to a good old fashioned shooting gallery at the fair ground and Bedfont were doing the level best to hang in there.

But finally after knocking at the door the door finally fell off and in a big way. Two goals in less than 60 seconds saw the Academy take the lead and then double it, a lead that never really was threatened.

The opener came on 34 minutes after Gallimore dribble and moved his way through a couple of Bedfont players with a great run and played in Babington to side foot past the advancing keeper. The second came after all the midfielders, Smith, Naranjo and Gallimore exchanged 8 or 9 passes. The ball was then played to Workman and his ball rolled onto Dwumfuo who this time made no mistake and thumped the ball across the keeper into the net

Straight from the whistle to start the second half the Academy were again taking the game to Bedfont another top quality cross from King found Babington 6 yards out and beating his markers in the air his header hit the cross bar. The rebound came out to Smith and with the ball bouncing awkwardly high, Smith did well to get his shot on target and the Bedfont keeper did well to tip the bar over the angle of post and crossbar for the Academy’s 8th corner of the match.

The 3rd and killer goal came on 51 minutes when left back Calvin Camara found some space out wide near the left-hand corner of the 18 yard box and his clever ball into the box for a on-the-move  Workman also coming in from the left and his shot fired past the keeper inside his near post.

Bedfont then had the first and best chance to score on 62 minutes when the Academy backline for once failed to deal with a ball and gifted a chance, but it was hit over the bar from 18 yards out. Babington then had the next chance for the Academy when his powerful shit was well tipped over the bar for a corner 2 minutes later.

Sub Kyle Stevenson on 76 minutes then saw as his shot was also tipped over the bar for another corner. This corner taken by Workman saw Charlie Black score with a header after the Bedfont defenders didn’t deal with it and all and the ball bounced and Black was in the right place to easily head home.

Only 3 minutes later and some excellent interplay between Workman and another sub in Jed Brown saw the later crash the ball against the post. Brown then went close again on 86 minutes when his shot went just over the bar.

The job was almost done but a Bedfont forward did get a shot off the flew over the bar on 88 minutes.

But in the last minute Bedfont was awarded a penalty for a push in the box . The penalty was duly dispatched giving keeper Leo Sergiou

So all in all another successful match with the 2nd Round League Cup match against Beaconsfield SYCOB FC set down for the middle of next month.
